The objectives of my research program are primarily to deal with animal manure management on issues related to air quality (odor and gas emissions from manure storages and buildings), nutrient treatment technologies and seepage issues related water quality, and value added products production from manure (renewable energy and chemicals), with the intent of addressing the imminent needs of stakeholders through development, evaluation, and application of advanced techniques to reduce the impact of animal manure on the environment and maintain the strong growth of the animal industry.
My extension program is designed to provide research-based educational information to our clientele about animal manure treatment techniques. These programming and delivering activities include program planning and design, materials development, writing extension publications and popular press articles, preparing and presenting information at educational meetings and workshops, answering questions and researching topics for extension educators and producers, and technology transfer for animal producers.
The Annual UM/SROC Open House is emblematic of my major outreach effort, which has a pervasive impact on connecting the University of Minnesota with Minnesotans, especially in the rural communities. The goal of the program is to bring the cutting edge research conducted by the UM researchers to the front door of many out-state citizens so that they can have a better understanding of how the UM research is related to, and will improve, their daily life. The program has been very successful in drawing a diverse audience including US and state legislators and policy makers, officials from local counties, agricultural professionals, commodity groups and producers, and ordinary citizens.
