Below you will find the daily maximum and minimum air temperatures, growing degree units (GDUs), and 24-hour precipitation amounts for this week. These values are recorded at 8 AM and reflect the conditions for the previous 24-hour period (8 AM to 8 AM) at the Southern Research & Outreach Center, Waseca.

Warm dry weather this week has been good for crop growth and also it has dried up some of our ponds created by last week’s huge rain.  Temperature averaged 73.0 degrees or 3.3 degrees above normal.  Rainfall totaled 0.38 inch which is 0.74 inch less than normal.  Growing degree units (GDUs) totaled 157.5.  This is 18% more than normal.  Since May 1 we have now accumulated 812.5 GDUs or 13% more than normal. 

Last year this week was very wet when 3.20 inches of rain fell.  Temperatures were near normal at 69.1 degrees.   Last year at this time we had accumulated 703.5 GDUs.

Corn growth has been tremendous this week and our taller corn is now over 4 feet tall.  Early planted soybeans are beginning to flower.  Be sure to check herbicide labels as several postemergence soybean products should not be applied when soybeans are flowering.  Small grains are headed out and pea harvest has begun.  The early pea crop looks very good.
