After last week’s big chill the sun came out and temperatures not only returned to normal, but did just a little bit better than that. Temperature this week averaged 59.8 degrees which is 4.2 degrees above normal. Rainfall totaled 0.26 inch or 0.60 inch less than normal. Growing degree units (GDUs) totaled 78, which is 22% more than normal. Since May 1, we have now accumulated 83 GDUs spot-on the long-term normal.

Last year this week was warm but a little wetter. Temperature averaged 59.8 degrees and 1.0 inch of rain fell. Last year at this time we had accumulated 98 GDUs.

Sunny skies dominated this week which was just what the crop needed after being cooled down last week. Corn planted April 10 or April 17 is up nicely and our April 25 planting is emerging now and all appear to have achieved a successful stand. Even soybeans planted April 10 or April 25 seem to have survived the resent cold snap.

The bulk of this year’s corn crop in now planted and soybean planting is underway. Weed problems have been more common in our soybean crop recently. As we plant the soybean crop this year, it may be wise to consider all aspects of crop production and not rely solely on herbicides to control weeds, which seems to have led to disappointing results in many cases.
