Below you will find the daily maximum and minimum air temperatures, growing degree units (GDUs), and 24-hour precipitation amounts for this week. These values are recorded at 8 AM and reflect the conditions for the previous 24-hour period (8 AM to 8 AM) at the Southern Research & Outreach Center, Waseca.

Last week we asked for rain, and this week that request was delivered. It may have come a little more violently than we were hoping, but in general, the rain will be helpful. Temperature averaged 77.3 degrees which is 9.8 degrees above normal. Rainfall totaled 2.18 inches, exactly double the normal amount. Growing degree units (GDUs) totaled 174 or 44% above normal. Since May 1, we have now accumulated 630.5 GDUs, which is 13% more than normal.
Last year this week was good for crop development, temperature averaged 75.3 degrees and 0.57 inch of rain fell. Last year at this time we had accumulated 633.5 GDUs.
Our earliest planted corn is in the V8 stage and is 24 inches tall. Corn will begin to grow rapidly now and the rainfall received this week will be helpful. Soybeans are anywhere from emerging to the V3 stage because the planting season was extended due to rain. Some of the latest planted soybeans that laid in dry soil will now grow with the moisture. Small grains are heading and the dry weather we just went through was good for putting up 1st crop alfalfa hay.
