Below you will find the daily maximum and minimum air temperatures, growing degree units (GDUs), and 24-hour precipitation amounts for this week. These values are recorded at 8 AM and reflect the conditions for the previous 24-hour period (8 AM to 8 AM) at the Southern Research & Outreach Center, Waseca.

So far this season we have talked about very cold and very warm conditions along with very wet and very dry conditions. This week, however we saw near normal conditions for this time of year. Temperature averaged 69 degrees or 0.5 degrees cooler than normal. Rain fall totaled 0.58 inch, which is 0.54 inch less than normal. Growing degree units (GDUs) totaled 132.5 or 1% more than normal. Since May 1, we have now accumulated 763 GDUs, this is 11% more than normal.

Last year this week was warm and very wet. Temperatures averaged 73.4 degrees and 3.44 inches of rain fell. Last year at this time we had accumulated 792 GDUs.

Corn is in the rapid growth phase now. Our earliest planting is in the V9 stage and grew a foot in the last week to reach 36 inches. I have not found an aphid colonizing soybeans yet, but I did see my first soybean flower of the season. Both should appear more frequently in the coming weeks. Available soil moisture is adequate and unless we see temperature extremes the next week or two should be optimum for crop growth and development.
