University of Minnesota Processing Pea Variety Trial

Minnesota grows more acres of peas for processing than any other state. In collaboration with the Midwest Food Products Association and pea breeding companies, the University of Minnesota SROC performs an annual trial of processing pea varieties to provide comparative single-environment data on variety performance. We measure yield, maturity, pea size, and plant structure parameters on ~60 varieties, planted around 20 April or 10 May each year. The trial report contains information on each variety, sorted by breeding company. 

Breeders and processors visit our plots in order to evaluate varieties themselves, and to help select varieties to grow. In 2020, in order to accommodate University COVID restrictions relating to outside groups visiting University property, photographs of each plot were taken near harvest. The photos are sorted by breeding company and planting date and can be downloaded below.
